After many months of searching for the perfect forever-home...IGCA senior rescue "Captain" has found a wonderful home full of love for him here in Alaska.

Thank You to Captain's wonderful new family for opening their hearts to him and to all of the rescue volunteers that helped make his adoption happen!   YAY!!

DUKE HAS BEEN ADOPTED!! YAY!!
His leg has healed & he has been adopted to a WONDERFUL FOREVER HOME
and even has an IG sister to cuddle with!
!

Duke is a 3 year old Italian Greyhound who was surrendered to IGCA Rescue Alaska with a broken leg. The leg had been broken for week before he was turned in....they  home-splinted his leg and then allowed him to walk around on it.  Unfortunately the splint rubbed and with the activity created a deep wound on his elbow which had to be stitched and is still causing him quite a bit of pain :(

"Sweet Mira"  1993- 12/15/08

With extreme sadness & heavy hearts Janice and I had to send sweet Mira to the bridge this
morning :(

Sweet Mira (15 yrs old)...she was such a bright-spirited & happy
little soul & we loved her so much. She always had a little smile on
her sweet snaggle-toothed lips. I am so happy to have known & loved
her and that fate brought her to us so that we could be with her for
the last year of her life

As most of you know, due to a degenerative spinal condition, Mira
lost her ability to walk in late July (right at the time when we
found a Forever-home for Mira & Monk together) So, Mira stayed behind & we
have had her here in hospice care ever since. Janice and I have
shared caring for Mira as an invalid and in the past month her
quality of life had really deteriorated and we knew it was time.

This has been one of the hardest things I have ever had to do in my
life. My only wish is that I could somehow convey to people who give
their senior dogs to rescue when they
become "inconvenient", "Divorce" or whatever their reason...how
making this decision has affected two dedicated rescue volunteers & so many other lives as well.
Both my heart and Janice's are so hurt...our hearts will never be the
same.

I make a point to tell all of my "adoptors" that "adopting a dog is a 15+ year COMMITMENT" It is
always my hope that with that one line...the weight of the commitment
they are making can be conveyed.

Thank You IGCA Rescue..for being so generous helping the seniors!!
And to all of you who generously
donated & bid to help with
fundraising for Mira's transport, dental surgery last year & her vet
bills, & continuing hospice care. After being abandoned into rescue in her
golden years...You all helped us make Mira's last year on earth the
absolute best we could give her.

RUN FREE sweet Mira...we will be looking for you at the bridge
someday...

Do not stand at my grave and weep.
I am not there, I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints on snow.
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn's rain.
When you awaken in the morning's hush,
I am the swift uplifting rush
of quiet birds in circled flight.
I am the stars that shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there, I did not die...

Mira
MIRA Update 12/01/08
Unfortunately Mira's condition has deteriorated some in the past month and she can no longer walk at all even to go potty :(
Poor Mira is now completely invalid :( We are still managing though and she is still hanging in there and her spirit has not faltered - Mira still looks at us with bright eyes and is cheerful (even demanding at dinnertime)
We took Mira to the vet recently as she has developed a huge lump on her neck. It is hard and about the size of a lime cut in half.
We got some Clavimox to see if it would help but there has been no change. It doesn't appear to hurt or be bothering her at all, so the vet says it is best to just keep an eye on it for now.
I want to say THANK YOU again to all who have donated to help with Mira's hospica care &vet bills. It has helped so much!!
Here are a couple of recent pics of Mira - in the one on the left you can see the lump on her neck.

I am very excited to have my "Tree of Shame" painting included in the

"Tree of Shame"

little tree of suffering, growing in shame
with weak & crooked hands
I hope this branch will hold, please, hold me
I pray to feel sun on my transparent body

those alive before me
unloved shapes lie beneath fallen leaves
buried little souls
fill the earth with our broken bones

I am frightened but no one comes
so I hide, in a fruitless tree
with my face to the sky
and wait for the wind to dry my eyes…………

"The Puppymill"

I woke up from a dream
The wind was blowing
I am falling

now I wait in a cage
and years pass me by
no love to keep me safe

if I could only fly away from here
to gentle arms and voice
I'd be your forever friend
but I don't have that choice

someday I'll lay my bones down here and
hope then you'll hear my voice....

Miss Spinner

A couple of years ago we adopted this sweetest little Iggy butterfly - "Miss Spinner".

Spinner doesn't have any teeth at all so she likes to show off her tongue :)

She is the sweetest, most loving & gentle little soul!
